Posted this to the art blog as it’s a better theme for reading long text posts than my 365 blog haha.

So I think it’s only fair I post my thoughts and various details:

Firstly, technically I failed as I didn’t draw every day, though it was within reason. Some days I was ill, and at one point I moved home so that kinda put a dampener on things. However I made sure to play catch up, so one some days I may have drawn multiple items, but it still all totals up to 365 drawings completed under my personal challenge!

My own “personal” rules were that I had to do one drawing on an “A5” canvas (though I regret that as some pictures are clearly running out of space, or are too small) and that it can be a small doodle to a fully coloured picture. If I missed any I had to play catch-up so that by New Years Day, 2016, I would have a minimum of 365 pictures. The final rule of course that they were posted to the 365 blog to show that I didn’t somehow churn up to 31 images out in one day. As you’ll be able to see, it was rare I played catch-up

It’s honestly helped me, I’ve improved, not leaps and bounds sure, but I’ve still improved. Artists shouldn’t stop improving though, so it’s not like I don’t have things to improve on still, but I’m proud of the present instead of focusing on what could be, which was a major curse of how I used to treat art.

This entire challenge has changed my attitudes, I’ve gone from avoiding posting my art if it wasn’t “finished” to allowing a “doodle” to be as complete as a fully rendered image. It’s helped me so much as that “finished and unfinished” attitude hurt my art, it stalled me, it made me not want to draw as I hadn’t completed the picture. Whereas now I treat a coloured image as “well I liked it that much” and that’s it… and it feels so good!

So where does that leave us now? Well, I plan on doing another challenge similar to this, but not the same. 366, as this year is a leap year, will happen but I’m not going to follow the same format.

One problem 365 was that between balancing that, work and my general personal life, I’ve not been able to complete any larger projects. For one I need to update my reference sheets as one of them will be 3 years old this year, and really needs artistically updating even if the details are mostly the same. It also meant that if I didn’t have the time I couldn’t do a fully rendered picture when I wanted to, as I made a habit of trying not to go back on images.

So 366 will not be a sketch a day, it’ll be an art update a day. Meaning that one day I will post a sketch, or more, and the next day may be progress on that image or a new sketch. So in all, I will have 366 updates. Whether that turns into 366 sketches? Who knows, that isn’t the point. Like the 365 challenge this update is to keep me artistically active over “OH MAN A ~CHALLENGE~”.

So I hope you can all join me in my little twist for 2016 again as I keep trucking… unless my hands fall off. I’ll be updating the blog theme at some point in the near future.
